French Antilles, Louis XVI, Stamped sol
n.d. (1779-1797) - Restrike of 2 Sols
Sold
This stamped sol was struck on the flan of a Louis XV double sol dated 1740 (Gadoury 281 and Clairand 34200). The date is still visible on the reverse at 11 o'clock. It also appears to be of the 40/39 variety, which can be seen on the 0.
Part of the legend, the crown and the two interlaced Ls can still be seen on this flan. The obverse also shows minimal traces of the first legend, at 1 o'clock and between 5 and 6 o'clock, where the word REX can be seen. The stamped sols are coins marked with a crowned C for French Colonies, following the Edict of 1763.
It indicates the restrike of billon coins that are worn, to be shipped to the colonies. These coins became very popular and were minted on new flan by 1780. English brass counterfeits were also produced after 1797.
