It is the third example to come up for sale and the first in over five years.

This unusual pattern was created by fusing the equivalent of two 5-franc coins dated 1879, one in gold and the other in silver. The coin’s weight is indicated on the reverse and is expressed to the nearest thousandth, reflecting an extremely precise strike. The gold-silver ratio is also indicated in the center, revealing the coin’s composition.

The obverse features the characteristic design of the 5-franc coins from the years 1870-1889, depicting Hercules, Liberty, and Equality.

Although hairline can be seen on the coin’s fully polished surfaces, they in no way detract from the exceptional condition of this coin.

These two elements also suggest that this could be the specimen from the Farouk Collection. Farouk I, King of Egypt from 1936 until 1952, the year of his overthrow, was known for having created a collection of prestigious, curious, and extremely rare objects in extraordinary condition. His collection also included a large number of numismatic items that were seized upon his overthrow and mostly sold starting on February 24, 1954, by Sotheby and Co. Lot 2206, p. 219, mentions on the fourth line “1879, 10-franc pattern by Dupre, gold ... J Silver 15½,” which could correspond to our coin.

This curious coin is therefore extremely rare and of great numismatic interest!

LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ

* ESSAI MONETAIRE · 1879 * / POIDS 26.613 GR.
10 / FRANCS / OR.........1 / ARGENT.15½

26.58 gr

https://www.numiscorner.com/products/981749-essai-monetaire-pour-la-10fr-hercule-quelques-hairlines-et-monnaie-vernie-certainement-provenant-la-la-collection-farouk-un-seul-exemplaire-passe-en-vente
