Struck in the city of Tomis, in Thrace for the Kingdom of Pontus (corresponding to the region of Skythia or Moesia Inferior, depending on the period and references). Superb specimen, with very well struck types, the portrait or the figure of Athena, which is not always the case on other specimens. The engraving is precise and highly detailed, and despite slight circulation wear on the higher reliefs of the reverse, all the details are still clearly visible. The centering is also excellent, and there's not a single element missing from this eye-pleasing engraving. Probably struck during the First Mithridatic War, which lasted from 88 to 84 BC, this coin is a reminder of the confrontation between Mithridates VI Eupator, King of Pontus, and Rome. The king was defeated in 84 by the troops of the famous Sulla, before returning to hostilities the following year, in 83, until 81. The Corpus Nummorum dates the striking period from 89 BC to the early part of the Third Mithridate War (75 to 63 BC), in 72 BC. This war put an end to the reign of King Mithridates VI, who took his own life after losing all his political support and being definitively defeated. CN Type 12819.
