Specimen no. 69 from the Pontivy hoard. Discovered in 1994 in the fireplace of a farmhouse near Pontivy in Morbihan (Bretagne), this treasure is a major contribution to French numismatics and knowledge of French coinage. The treasure contained 117 gold coins, the earliest dating from the reign of Charles VI, with gold royals dating from 1326. Studied by the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and then published in the book ‘Trésors Monétaires XXII’, published in 2007, this treasure provides a privileged insight into the monetary circulation of gold modules during the 14th century in western France. While the coins of Philip VI (1328-1350) and Jean II (1350-1364) are the most represented, with 93 of the 117 coins, there are also some exceptional rarities. These include a Golden Crown of Philippe VI, as well as a few foreign coins, notably modules from England, with a Golden Noble in the name of Edward III, and coins from the eastern part of France, with a Golden Sheep from Brabant (present-day Belgium), in the name of Joanna and Wenceslaus. This privileged window onto the circulation of high-value coins and the practice of hoarding during this period is an exceptional discovery for French numismatists, and its sale gives collectors the chance to acquire an exceptional coin with a very special provenance, in absolutely splendid condition, since many of the examples represented had only circulated for a very short time and were sealed and obtained exceptional grading notes for these types of coins.

+ AGN° DEI° QVI° TOLL° PECA'° MVDI° MISERERE° NOB

+ XP'C: VINCIT: XP'C: REGNAT: XP'C: IMPERAT (Trefoils as dots)

4.74 gr

https://www.numiscorner.com/products/899720-coin-france-jean-ii-le-bon-mouton-dor-1355-pontivys-hoard-ngc-au58
