One can admire the king in coronation robe, crowned, wearing the collars of the orders of Saint Michael and the Holy Spirit and putting on the heavy coat with fleurdelisé that Hyacinthe Rigaud will paint in 1701 on a Louis XIV then aged 63 years. Nothing like that here because our essai is dated 1653 and the king is then only 15 years old. The strick therefore seems to be backdated to 1653, the king being crowned only one year later, or the test may have been composed in anticipation of the coming event, anticipating a new type representing the king in his most noble attributes. As always in any case, and in particular with Louis XIV, coins becomes here an inexhaustible and fascinating source of political propaganda in the service of its issuing entity. One will notice that this essai seems to have circulated, as evidenced by the wear on the obverse, especially on the face of the king. Nice gray patina with the beginnings of iridescent reflections on the reverse.
